Why is it that PPS material can achieve high flame retardancy without the addition of flame retardants?

 

PPS is a high-crystallinity polymer with tightly arranged molecular chains, which can effectively reduce the permeation rate of heat and oxygen and slow down the combustion process. The main chain of PPS is formed by connecting benzene rings through thioether bonds (-S-). The rigid aromatic structure of the benzene rings provides high thermal stability and chemical inertness, while the thioether bonds may promote cross-linking reactions at high temperatures, forming a dense carbon layer that can isolate oxygen and prevent the escape of combustible gases, thereby inhibiting the spread of combustion. Additionally, PPS has a melting point of 280and a decomposition temperature exceeding 500, making it difficult to decompose and reducing its flammability. Moreover, PPS tends to undergo carbonization rather than violent decomposition at high temperatures. Furthermore, PPS has an extremely high oxygen index of around 50%, which is much higher than the oxygen concentration in the air (about 21%), exhibiting excellent self-extinguishing properties.  

 

The characteristics of PPS material in the flow channel direction and the vertical flow channel direction differ significantly. Why is this?

 

Due to PPS being a semi-crystalline plastic, coupled with the influence of molecular orientation, the anisotropy of PPS material is quite pronounced. The degree of anisotropy is affected by various factors such as product thickness, molding conditions, and even gate shape. The affected properties include strength, elastic modulus, elongation, and even shrinkage rate, linear thermal expansion coefficient, which directly affect dimensional properties, as well as heat distortion temperature. Compared to cross-linked PPS, linear PPS has better strength, impact resistance, and elongation in the TD (through-direction) perpendicular to the flow direction. However, in the high-temperature range above Tg, the bending strength of both types of PPS in the TD direction is equivalent.
